In the United States, the non-alcoholic beverages industry looks quite similar, with bottled water and carbonated soft drinks as the two largest segments. Sales volume of liquid refreshment beverages in the United States was around 34.5 billion gallons in 2020. Leading companies based on volume share include Coca-Cola Company, PepsiCo and Nestle Waters. Among the leading brands, Coke dominated the liquid refreshment beverage market in the United States in 2020, capturing about 13 percent of the market share. Coke was followed by Pepsi, Dr Pepper and Mountain Dew.

Consumption trends

While Coca-Cola and Pepsi-Cola were the leading carbonated soft drink brands in the U.S., private labelbottled water brands made up the largest portion of bottled water sales. Consumption figures also point to opposing trends for the two segments. Per capita consumption of carbonated soft drinks in the United States has been steadily decreasing over the years, from around 159 liters in 2013 to around 131 in 2020. In contrast, consumption of bottled water has followed an upward trend over the years, increasing from 16.2 gallons per capita in 1999 to more than 45 gallons per capita in 2020. This suggests a greater emphasis on and knowledge of healthy drinking behaviors in recent years in the United States.
