Mobile internet providers and traffic
The Hungarian mobile internet market has been dominated by Telekom, with a 43 percent market share in 2021. Moreover, the company was the first to launch commercial 5G services in the country. Yettel, formerly known as Telenor Hungary, is considered the second largest mobile phone operator and recorded a revenue worth 545 million euros in 2021.Mobile internet data traffic reached nearly 192 million gigabytes in the second quarter of 2021, which represented an increase of over 207 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2018. Moreover, mobile devices accounted for over 54 percent of the online traffic in 2021, making them the most widely used connected device, followed by desktop computers. However, in case of certain websites, significant differences can be noticed in device usage. In other words, while in February 2022 less than 24 percent of youtube.com’s traffic was generated by mobile devices, the biggest share of Hungarian news portals’ traffic originated from smartphones.
Apps and games
According to the results of a survey conducted in 2020, half of Hungarians spent three to four hours using mobile applications each day while a further five percent stated that some applications were always running on their phones. When it comes to the most widely-used apps, in May 2021, the shopping app SHEIN ranked first based on the number of downloads, followed by QR & Barcode Reader. During the same period of time, Google One was the leading mobile in Hungary considering its revenue.In 2020, every fourth Hungarian gamer played games on their smartphones. Regarding mobile game applications, as of May 2021, Hair Challenge was the most downloaded free mobile game in the country. At the same time, Gaminator Casino Slots - Play Slot Machines 777 was the highest grossing mobile game in Hungary with a revenue of 147 thousand U.S. dollars.
