The first electric and gas-powered household and home appliances hit the market in the early 1900s. Since then, the demand for household appliances has developed into a global industry worth several hundred billion U.S. dollars in sales every year. With increasing wealth, bigger living spaces, and access to electricity, home appliances are now affordable for a large share of the global population to assist in daily home and household tasks.
